What kind of homes are in Wilmslow?
Wilmslow is a town of family homes. Around the town centre on Grove Street, Alderley Road and Water Lane are large estates of mostly detached family houses in a wide range of styles and ages. The town is also known for its pre-war "Wilmslow Parks", Fulshaw Park, Pownall Park and Wilmslow Park, with large detached houses in mature, landscaped grounds; Pownall Park, developed from the 1930s, includes several Art Deco houses. The Highfield estate, built around 1921 by the old Wilmslow Urban District Council and influenced by the garden suburb movement, is now a conservation area. Older cottages survive in the historic core around St Bartholomew's Church and in the hamlets and "greens" that grew together to form the town, such as Dean Row.
What that means for windows and doors:
- Large detached homes on the Parks and newer estates. Many sets of windows, wide openings to the garden and a front door that sets the tone of the house. Bifold and patio doors, and statement composite doors, are popular here.
- 1930s and Art Deco houses. Horizontal windows, curved bays and, on some houses, original metal-framed windows.
- Cottages and the Highfield estate. Smaller openings and simple, traditional window patterns that suit casement windows with slim frames.
Do I need planning permission for new windows in Wilmslow?
Usually not for a house outside a conservation area, as replacing windows and doors is normally permitted development if the new ones look similar to the old. Permission or consent is more likely to be needed for flats, listed buildings, or homes covered by an Article 4 direction. Wilmslow has five conservation areas, so we check every address at the survey.
Cheshire East Council lists these conservation areas in Wilmslow: St Bartholomew's (designated 1988), Styal (1975), Hawthorn Lane (1980), Bollin Hill (1988, with a new appraisal in 2024) and Highfield (1988). St Bartholomew's Church is Grade I listed, and there are several listed cottages around the historic core; listed buildings always need listed building consent for new windows.
All replacement windows must meet Building Regulations.
