What kind of homes are in Timperley?

Most of Timperley was built from the 1930s onwards. The early 1930s alone brought around a dozen new housing estates, and Park Road (once Wash Lane) was extended to the village at that time, opening up the land between the Bridgewater Canal and Heyes Lane for new homes. The result is a suburb of semi-detached and detached family houses, many with bay windows, hipped roofs and side entrances, alongside older red-brick cottages in the Cheshire East style and later post-war estates such as Broomwood.

What that means for windows and doors:

  • 1930s semis and detached houses. Curved or square bays, small top-opening lights and front doors with a glazed panel. Bay windows need careful surveying because each bay is measured and made as a set; we make ours to measure to measure. A composite door with a period-style glass panel suits the original look.
  • Older cottages. Smaller openings and lower door heights, which suit casement windows with slimmer frames.
  • Post-war and modern homes. Patio doors and bifolds are popular for rear extensions and kitchen-diners.

Do I need planning permission for new windows in Timperley?

In most cases, no. Replacing windows and doors on a house is normally permitted development if the new ones look similar to the old. You are more likely to need permission or consent if the property is listed, is a flat, or the council has made an Article 4 direction covering it. We check this for every address at the survey.

All replacement windows must meet Building Regulations, including energy efficiency and, for some upstairs rooms, a fire escape opening.

A little Timperley history

Timperley's name comes from the Old English for "a clearing in the wood". It stayed a farming area until the Bridgewater Canal was cut through it in 1776, after which it became known for market gardens, and for Timperley rhubarb, supplying the growing city of Manchester. The railway arrived in 1849 with a station on what is now Park Road, and the village grew into a commuter suburb. That station is now Timperley Metrolink stop on the Altrincham line. The village's hockey, cricket and golf clubs date from the 1880s and 1890s.
