Short answer: Tilt and turn windows open in two ways: tilt the handle one way and the top of the window leans in for air, turn it further and the whole window swings into the room. They suit upstairs rooms, flats and wide openings where cleaning the outside is hard. Hale Windows (part of Home ESS) supplies and fits uPVC tilt and turn windows across Hale, Altrincham, Sale and Timperley with our own fitting team.

How they open

In the tilt position, the window leans in at the top by a small amount. That lets air in while the window stays secure, which many owners like for bedrooms at night.

In the turn position, the window opens fully into the room like a door. That makes it easy to clean the outside glass from inside, and it gives a wide opening.

Where they work best

Upstairs rooms on semis and detached houses, where you cannot easily reach the outside of the glass. Wide openings on newer homes. Rooms where you want air in without opening the window wide.

On a period front, a uPVC sash window or a flush casement usually keeps the look better. Tilt and turn windows can still be used at the back of the house.

Think about the room

Because the window opens inwards, check there is space in front of it. Blinds, curtains and furniture on the window sill need to clear the opening. We will point this out at the survey.

On a small bathroom or a landing, a tilt and turn window can be the easiest one to open, because you only need to reach the handle. On a kitchen window over a sink or a worktop, an outward-opening casement is often easier, because nothing has to be moved before you open it. Many homes end up with a mix: casements downstairs at the front, and tilt and turn windows upstairs at the back, all in the same colour so the house still matches.

What you get

Every window has argon-filled double glazing and a multi-point locking system, in white, grey, black or woodgrain. Every installation comes with a 15-year guarantee on uPVC windows and composite doors, 10-year guarantee on aluminium.

Escape windows

Upstairs rooms need a window that is big enough to escape through in a fire. A tilt and turn window opens fully, so it often meets this well. We check every upstairs room at the survey.

Questions

Are tilt and turn windows secure?

Yes. They have a multi-point locking system, and the tilt position stays locked into the frame.

Can I have tilt and turn windows downstairs?

Yes, but check there is space inside for the window to open.

Do they suit a period house?

Usually a sash or flush casement suits the front of a period house better.

Who fits them in Trafford?
