Short answer: If your Altrincham house had sliding sash windows when it was built, a uPVC sash window keeps that look best. If it had side-hung casements, or you want easier opening and cleaning, a flush casement is often the better choice. We supply and fit both with our own fitting team.

Start with the original windows

Many Victorian terraces and semis near Altrincham town centre were built with sliding sashes. Some Edwardian houses had casements. Look at the oldest windows on your street to see what was there.

uPVC sash windows

uPVC sash windows slide up and down and keep the proportions of a period front.

Flush casements

Flush casement windows sit level with the frame, like timber casements. They open outwards and are easy to clean.

Opening, cleaning and air

A sash window opens at the top and the bottom, which lets warm air out at the top and fresh air in at the bottom. Many uPVC sashes also tilt in for cleaning. A flush casement opens outwards on hinges, which gives a wide opening and makes it easy to clean the outside from inside the room.

Both have argon-filled double glazing and a multi-point locking system, and both can have trickle vents for Building Regulations.

Colour and details

White is the classic choice on a Victorian front. Cream, grey and heritage greens are popular too, and woodgrain finishes look like painted timber from the street. Glazing bars can match the pattern of the old windows, such as two over two on many Victorian sashes.
